Cardiology Q & A

What cardiology services does Medex Diagnostic & Treatment Center offer?

Led by Dr. Aditya Mangla, the cardiology team at Medex Diagnostic & Treatment Center is skilled in providing a full range of cardiology care and services for issues such as:

  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Vertigo and dizziness
  • Syncope and fainting “spells”
  • Heart murmur
  • Atrial fibrillation
  • Arrhythmia
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Angina and chest pain

Dr. Mangla often diagnoses these conditions using tests such as EKGs and echocardiograms.

What is the difference between an EKG and an echocardiogram?

An EKG, or electrocardiogram, is a test Dr. Mangla may recommend to measure the electrical activity in your heart. The test uses flat electrodes that are attached to your body in several spots using a special sticky gel, with wires leading from the electrodes attached to a special machine designed to detect and track your heart activity right through your skin with absolutely no discomfort. The test takes just a few minutes and is performed right in the office, usually as part of either a regular preventive exam or a sick visit.

An echocardiogram is an ultrasound examination of your heart that Dr. Mangla and the team at Medex Diagnostic & Treatment Center can use to evaluate the way your heart is functioning. Like an EKG, an echocardiogram is noninvasive and painless, using a handheld device to transmit and receive ultrasound waves through your skin that can create images of your heart on a monitor where they can be viewed by your doctor. Images can also be saved for future evaluation.

Echocardiograms may be used as part of a stress test to evaluate the way your heart functions during increased levels of physical activity.

What are the most common symptoms of heart disease?

Heart disease can cause a variety of signs and symptoms depending on how your heart is affected, including:

  • Fainting
  • Shortness of breath
  • Persistent fatigue or weakness
  • Chest pain or pressure
  • Palpitations

Some signs and symptoms can be very difficult to detect without a medical evaluation, which is why having a routine exam is critically important for your health, especially if you have risk factors for heart disease.
