How do I know if I need to be screened for colorectal cancer?

The American Cancer Society recommends men and women with average risks for colorectal cancer have a colonoscopy every 10 years beginning at age 50 to check for polyps and other potential signs of colon cancer. Men and women with increased risk for colorectal cancer are generally screened both more frequently and beginning at a younger age. Risk factors that may necessitate more frequent testing include a family history of colon cancer or polyps, or a personal history of polyps or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

When is an endoscopy necessary?

Endoscopy is a broad term which usually refers to an examination of the upper portion of your gastrointestinal tract — specifically the throat, esophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine called the duodenum.

Upper GI endoscopies can be performed to diagnose the source of pain in the area, problems with digestion or swallowing, and chronic issues like GERD. Dr. Chusid may also use an upper GI endoscopy to perform minimally invasive treatment options if needed.

How should I prepare for my gastroenterology visit?

Be ready to discuss all your symptoms with the team at Medex Diagnostic & Treatment Center, even those that seem minor or insignificant. Making a list of symptoms and concerns is a good way to ensure you don't forget anything.

If blood work or other lab tests are ordered, it's also important to make sure you have those tests completed well in advance of your visit so the results are available for review.
