Neurology Q & A

What is neurology?

Neurology is a branch of medicine that deals with disorders of the nervous system, including the brain, spine, and the nerves that connect them. When there’s a problem with your nervous system, you may have difficulty moving around, speaking normally, swallowing, breathing, or learning new things. Neurological conditions can also affect your memory, senses, and mood.

What conditions do neurologists treat?

Common neurological conditions include:

Seizure disorders

A seizure is a sudden surge of electrical activity in the brain that can cause symptoms like loss of consciousness, confusion, and involuntary movements. Epilepsy describes a group of conditions that cause recurring seizures.

Multiple sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the brain and spinal cord that affects the way your brain communicates with the rest of your body, causing symptoms such as vision problems, pain, fatigue, and difficulty with mobility and balance.

Stroke

A stroke happens when the supply of blood to your brain is cut off, depriving your brain of oxygen and nutrients. Though a stroke is a medical emergency requiring immediate attention, Dr. Blatt helps you recover after a stroke.

Parkinson’s disease

Parkinson’s disease is a condition that develops slowly and causes a loss of control over movement and bodily functions. Symptoms include tremors, muscle stiffness, and bradykinesia, or an extreme slowness of movement, which may present as a loss of facial expressions. Parkinson’s can also disrupt mood, sleep, and digestion.

Headache disorders

If you have frequent, severe headaches, you may need to see a neurologist, especially if the headaches don’t respond to over-the-counter pain medication. Chronic headache disorders such as cluster headaches and migraines require more advanced treatment, including prescription medication and injectable anesthetics.

With treatment, including medication and lifestyle changes, you can manage the symptoms and slow the progression of many neurological conditions.

When should I see a neurologist?

If you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms, consider scheduling an appointment with Dr. Blatt to determine if a neurological condition is a cause:

  • A difficulty with balance and coordination
  • Frequent, severe headaches
  • Numbness and tingling, especially if it comes on suddenly or if these symptoms only affect one side of your body
  • Trouble sleeping, especially if you suddenly become very drowsy or you’re kept awake by involuntary leg movements
  • Tremors and other involuntary movements
