If I have a PSA test, do I still need to have a digital rectal exam?

Both the PSA test and the digital rectal exam, or DRE, are designed to look for changes that could indicate the presence of prostate cancer, and ideally, you should have both a PSA test and a DRE to provide the most accurate results.

The PSA test measures the level of specific proteins in the blood that can become elevated in men with prostate cancer, while the DRE checks for physical changes in the size or shape of the prostate gland itself. If you have questions or concerns about either test, you can discuss the evaluations during your consultation so you can make the best and most informed decision about your care.

What are the signs of a urinary tract infection?

UTIs cause signs and symptoms that may include:

  • Pain, burning or tingling when urinating
  • Frequent urge to urinate, often without significant output
  • Inability to empty your bladder completely or feeling that your bladder is not empty after urinating
  • Backache, fever, or flu-like symptoms, especially if the infection is not promptly treated or you don’t take the full course of antibiotics

Urinary tract infections can affect both men and women, but they're more common among women. Without prompt and appropriate treatment, they can spread and cause significant medical problems, including kidney infection and damage. Antibiotic treatment must be closely followed to help prevent recurrence of the infection.
